Chapter 8

One thing Donna was trying to get used to was being in the same house as Jason. She'd wanted to go back to her apartment, but Jason had pointed out they were married now, and she needed to be at his place. He had a townhouse in the Upper East Side and a house in the Hamptons. Donna had only ever had one place of residence at one time, so to know she was going to split her life between two houses was a strange sensation. Two bedrooms, two homes, two offices.

Donna had been off her blog for over a week, and she needed to get back into it. Her viewers were going to drop if she didn’t keep the content fresh. But Jason took control of that pretty quickly, assigning three eager young assistants to her. Danielle, Jeremy and Kim were like magicians at the keyboard, and they were to be Donna’s permanent workers. They would work on the blog and keep her up to date while Donna got herself set up and settled down in her new life.

Donna wasn’t sure what to think about that. But she did need to sort out her new office space. It took three days before she could relax and give everything over to the three youngsters, who were beginning to make her feel old.

There was a nice big bedroom in the townhouse that would be perfect for her office. Jason was more than happy to let her use it, and Donna set about making it her own. The only thing she allowed from Jason was a brand new desk, which he presented to her as a gift. She wouldn’t accept anything else.

It was a sunny afternoon and Donna was fixing herself a protein shake when her cell phone rang. Donna smiled when she saw the caller ID, putting it on loudspeaker.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Hey, honey.” Her mother’s voice was almost like smooth chocolate, purring down the line. “How's married life?”

“Pretty good. I’m getting the hang of being a wife.” Donna shook her shake hard, silently counting to twenty. “I’ve got everything finally set up. The house is huge. I feel like I need to fill the room with more things.”

Amy Blake laughed.

“I know the feeling. Looks like a minimalistic room when it’s far from it.”

“Exactly.”

“Just don’t go overboard. You don’t want to get too much and then struggle to move around.”

“I’m not planning to, don’t worry.” Donna took the top off her shaker and took a swig. “I’ll only get what I can afford.”

“Surely Jason would let you get more things to stock up your office?”

“We’re keeping everything separate, Mom. Jason doesn’t have access to my money and I don’t have access to his.”

“You what?”

“My choice.”

There was a stunned silence.

“Mom?”

“I’m still here.” Amy sounded a little dazed. “I thought you were nuts to marry a billionaire, but not to take advantage of his money? I don’t want to sound like a gold-digger myself, but that is absolutely nuts. Do you want me to buy a strait-jacket for Christmas?”

Donna laughed.
